The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 marks the biggest redesign of Samsung's book-style foldable since the original Fold. 

Instead of simply refining last year's Galaxy Z Fold7, Samsung has introduced a shorter, wider "passport-style" design, making the phone feel much more like a traditional smartphone when closed while retaining the large fold-out display that makes the Fold series unique.

Alongside its redesigned shape, the Fold8 benefits from a larger battery, faster charging, a lighter build and the latest Snapdragon chipset. It sits below the new Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, sacrificing some camera hardware while retaining the same premium foldable experience for users who prioritise multitasking and productivity.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8: Design

The biggest talking point is undoubtedly the redesign. Samsung has abandoned the tall, narrow form factor of previous Fold devices in favour of a wider, shorter chassis that feels much more natural to use one-handed. When folded, it resembles a conventional smartphone rather than the remote control-like shape of older Fold models.

Despite housing a larger battery, the Fold8 is also Samsung's lightest Fold to date, weighing around 201g, making it noticeably easier to carry than the Galaxy Z Fold7.

Samsung also introduces its new Flex Titanium display structure, helping reduce the appearance of the crease while improving durability. Combined with IP48 water and dust resistance, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and Armour Aluminium, the Fold8 feels every bit like a flagship device.

The Fold8 features a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X inner display with a new 4:3 aspect ratio, making it much better suited to multitasking, productivity and split-screen apps than previous Galaxy Fold devices. 

The 5.5-inch cover display also benefits from the wider design, making typing and everyday navigation much more comfortable.

Both displays support adaptive 120Hz refresh rates, Vision Booster technology and up to 3,000nits peak brightness, delivering vibrant colours and excellent outdoor visibility.

Compared with the Galaxy Z Fold7, this year's model feels considerably more natural to use when closed, addressing one of the biggest criticisms levelled at Samsung's previous Fold phones. 

While rivals like Google's Pixel Fold and Honor Magic V series also favour wider designs, Samsung has finally embraced a format many foldable fans have been asking for.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8: Camera

Unlike the new Fold8 Ultra, the standard Fold8 opts for a streamlined dual rear camera setup, consisting of a 50MP main camera and a 50MP ultrawide camera.

There are another two cameras, one on the cover being a 10MP wide, and one internal 10MP ultrawide.

While Samsung has removed the dedicated telephoto camera found on the Fold7, the main sensor supports 2x optical-quality zoom through in-sensor cropping and benefits from Samsung's latest Galaxy AI image processing.

Compared with the Galaxy Z Fold7, photography is largely similar for everyday shots, but users wanting true optical zoom or Samsung's flagship 200MP sensor will need to look at the new Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra instead.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8: Performance

Powering the Fold8 is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, paired with 12GB RAM (or 16GB on the 1TB model) and running Android 17 with One UI 9.

Performance is exceptional, whether you're editing photos, gaming or taking advantage of Samsung's enhanced multitasking features. The wider internal display is particularly useful for running multiple apps simultaneously, making the Fold8 feel closer to a compact tablet than ever before.

Samsung has also expanded its Galaxy AI features, introducing new productivity tools alongside camera functions such as Dual Recording and My FanCam, which intelligently tracks subjects while filming.

Compared with the Fold7, the new processor brings faster AI performance, improved graphics and better overall efficiency, helping the larger battery last even longer.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8: Battery & Charging

Samsung has increased the battery to 4,800mAh, around 9% larger than the Fold7's 4,400mAh battery, while simultaneously making the phone thinner and lighter.

Charging also receives a welcome upgrade, with support for:

• 45W wired charging
• 20W wireless charging
• Reverse wireless charging

This represents a noticeable improvement over the Fold7's slower charging speeds and helps the Fold8 compete more closely with premium foldables from Honor and Google.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8: Where it doesn’t move the needle

While the Galaxy Z Fold8 introduces one of the biggest design changes the Fold series has seen, not everything has moved forward at the same pace. 

The 7.6-inch internal display retains the same size and 120Hz refresh rate as the Fold7, so existing owners won't notice a dramatic difference once the device is unfolded.

The camera system is another area where changes are limited. Although Samsung's latest image processing delivers improved colours and dynamic range, the hardware itself isn't a major leap and, in fact, the removal of the dedicated telephoto camera means users who regularly rely on optical zoom may find the Fold7 or new Fold8 Ultra more appealing.

For Galaxy Z Fold7 owners, the wider form factor and larger battery are the standout upgrades, but outside of those improvements, the overall experience will feel familiar.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 feels like the Fold series finally growing into itself. Rather than chasing thinner bezels or bigger cameras, Samsung has focused on making the Fold more practical to use every day, and the wider design is arguably the biggest improvement the range has ever received.

The combination of the new form factor, lighter weight, larger battery and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 makes this a significant upgrade over the Galaxy Z Fold7, even if the camera system is a little less ambitious than the new Ultra model.
