The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is more than just the successor to the Galaxy Z Fold7 - it's the first Ultra-branded Fold, taking over as Samsung's flagship foldable.
While the standard Galaxy Z Fold8 introduces a completely new, wider form factor, the Fold8 Ultra refines the familiar book-style design with flagship hardware aimed at power users, creators and photography enthusiasts.
Compared with the Fold7, Samsung has focused on meaningful upgrades across the board. There's a larger 5,000mAh battery, improved charging speeds, a class-leading 200MP camera system, upgraded Galaxy AI features and the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy processor.
It isn't simply a bigger Fold - it's designed to sit alongside the Galaxy S Ultra range as Samsung's no-compromise smartphone.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: Design
Rather than adopting the wider "passport" shape of the Fold8, the Fold8 Ultra sticks with Samsung's traditional tall book-style design, but refines it in almost every area. The device is thinner, easier to open and features Samsung's new Flex Titanium hinge, reducing the visibility of the crease while improving durability.
The premium construction combines Armour Aluminium, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and IP48 water and dust resistance, giving it the reassuring feel expected from Samsung's most expensive smartphone. Powering the Fold8 Ultra is Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, paired with 12GB RAM, or 16GB on the 1TB model, and Android 17 with One UI 9.
Performance is exactly what you'd expect from Samsung's flagship foldable. Apps launch instantly, multitasking feels effortless and demanding games run smoothly across the expansive internal display.
Galaxy AI also takes another step forward, with improved on-device productivity tools, smarter writing assistance, enhanced translation features and upgraded photo editing powered by Samsung's latest AI models.
Compared with the Fold7, the new chipset delivers stronger AI performance, improved graphics and greater power efficiency, making the Fold8 Ultra feel every bit as premium as its price suggests.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: Battery & Charging
Samsung finally addresses one of the Fold series' biggest criticisms by increasing the battery to 5,000mAh, around 14% larger than the Fold7's 4,400mAh cell. Combined with the more efficient Snapdragon chipset, this comfortably delivers all-day battery life, even during heavy multitasking.
Charging has also improved, with support for:

Compared with the Fold7, these upgrades make the Fold8 Ultra much more competitive against premium foldables from Honor and Google.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: Where it doesn't move the needle
While the Fold8 Ultra represents Samsung's best foldable yet, there are still a few areas that feel more evolutionary than revolutionary. The overall software experience will be familiar to anyone coming from the Fold7, with One UI building on existing multitasking features rather than completely reinventing them.
Similarly, while the displays are brighter and the crease is less noticeable, the day-to-day viewing experience isn't dramatically different from last year's model. Existing Fold7 owners may appreciate the refinements, but they aren't likely to be transformative.
Finally, the Fold8 Ultra commands a sizable premium over both the Galaxy Z Fold8 and its predecessor. Unless you'll genuinely benefit from the 200MP camera, larger battery and Ultra-exclusive hardware, the standard Fold8 offers much of the same foldable experience for less.
